These compact devices integrate a microprocessor, digital and analog I/O ports, communication interfaces (such as RS-232, RS-485, Ethernet, or CAN bus), and a graphical display (typically LCD or TFT) with touchscreen or keypad input. PLDs are designed for real-time control of industrial processes, offering features like ladder logic programming, data logging, alarm management, and recipe handling. They operate at various voltage levels (e.g., 24 VDC, 110-240 VAC) and support multiple communication protocols (Modbus, Profibus, etc.). The display resolution and size vary, with common options including 4.3 to 10.1" screens.
