Residential boxes, also known as consumer units, distribution boards, or breaker panels, are the central hubs for electrical distribution in homes and small commercial buildings. These enclosures house circuit breakers, residual current devices (RCDs), and other protective devices, typically rated for currents up to 125A and voltages up to 240V AC. They are designed for flush or surface mounting, with IP ratings ranging from IP30 to IP65 depending on the environment. Key technical features include the number of ways (e.g., 4, 8, 12, 24), busbar configurations for single-phase or three-phase supply, and compatibility with modular DIN-rail mounted devices. Materials are usually thermoplastic or metal, offering durability and fire resistance.
These boxes are primarily installed in residential settings such as apartments, houses, and small offices, where they serve as the main point for overcurrent and earth fault protection. They are also used in temporary power distribution for construction sites or events, where portable or weatherproof versions are required. In industrial contexts, smaller residential boxes may be used for lighting control or auxiliary circuits within larger installations.
Subcategories include main switch consumer units, split-load boards, and high-integrity boards. Key article codes often follow a pattern like AB33-04, AB33-08, AB33-12, where the number indicates the number of ways. For example, AB33-04 is a 4-way board, AB33-08 is an 8-way board, and AB33-12 is a 12-way board. These codes may also include suffixes for specific features like 'M' for metal or 'S' for surface mounting.
