ABB has a range of protection elements that are in the power circuit of the user installation in order to ensure its protection against surges. Its working principle is simply based on a temperature increase produces a deformation in a bimetal which, if deforms to reach a certain value, leads to the disabling circuit and the events signaled. This bimetal consists of two metals with different expansion coefficient but united. Responsible for producing the curvature of these sheets is a resistor through which current flows which is directed towards the engine.

These thermal relays and ABB contactors have a range of settings in amperes to set that time should open the circuit. Compliance with national and international, the rated current of the motor is taken as the current regulation and no interruption as they could get to think of a time.

All ABB thermal relays incorporate a free mechanism, which does not prevent the interruption of current flow in case of failure even if they are pressing the reset button or intended RESET button.

They also have temperature compensation and protection against possible interruptions in phases according to the IEC60947-4-1 standard. This rule tells the user that the devices would shorten their downtime in the event of an interruption phase, further improving engine protection.
